User-Replaceable Batteries for Dive Computers

User-Replaceable Batteries for Dive Computers Factory Service vs. Do-It-Yourself (DIY)
Many dive computers today have a user-replaceable battery feature. Still, most manufacturers -- including Dive Rite -- recommend returning the unit to their factory service center. Factory battery replacements cost more than DIY. However, factory service for changing the battery usually includes a warranty that acts like insurance. If your dive computer floods after a factory battery change, then you can just return it under warranty. Nonetheless, many divers feel competent to change the battery in their dive computer, and sometimes it's not practical to wait for factory turnaround.

Replacement Batteries
The user-replaceable battery in nearly all dive computers is a lithium chemistry based cell. Some dive computers use common types of lithium batteries for which replacements are widely available but often are of questionable quality. Other dive computers use uncommon types of lithium batteries for which replacements are not readily available. Dive Rite Express offers the highest-quality and longest-life batteries that we can find for virtually every brand and model of dive computer.

The Problem
Compared with other types of batteries the lithium battery discharge curve is flat, providing a consistently high voltage throughout the life of the battery and contributing to their very long service life. However, as the battery reaches end-of-life the voltage will drop very rapidly. This can be a problem in dive computers because it means that there is very little time between the appearance of the low battery warning and the complete depletion of the battery. Once the low battery warning appears, you should not rely upon the dive computer until the battery is replaced. The problem may be worse if you are planning a repetitive dive, because replacing the battery may cause your dive computer to clear the tissue saturation calculations.

The Solution
The 10-year shelf life and low cost of lithium batteries offer the diver a solution to the worry of a sudden low battery warning or dead dive computer in the middle of a dive trip. First, the extremely long shelf life means it's reasonable to keep a spare in your dry-box should you unexpectedly need a battery change. Second, the cost of a battery is very low compared with the cost of even one missed dive. Consider changing your battery every one or two years -- well before your dive computer displays a low battery warning. Lithium cells are environmentally friendly, offering easy and safe disposal, because they do not contain heavy metals found in most batteries.

Find the Replacement Battery for Your Dive Computer

Consult the manual that came with your dive computer to identify its replacement battery and for replacement instructions. Read carefully to identify the battery type and quantity required as a few designs require two cells. If your dive computer is a hoseless receiver model that reports the scuba tank contents pressure, you will need an additional different battery for the transmitter. Dive Rite suggests cleaning, lubricating and reusing the battery door O-ring for their dive computers. Some other manufacturers suggest replacing the battery door O-ring when the battery is replaced. We do not offer replacment battery door O-rings with our replacement batteries. If you have any reservations regarding DIY battery replacement, we recommend using the factory service center for your dive computer.

3.0V CR2032 Battery

3.0V CR2032 -- Maxell CR2032

The Lithium Manganese Dioxide 3.0V CR2032 coin battery is possibly the most popular lithium battery made, which accounts for its low cost and wide availability. Its small size also somewhat limits its power and some dive computer designs require two cells. The brand name cell that we offer is a high-quality 220 mAh capacity.
The Dive Rite NiTek Duo uses one of the CR2032 battery.

3.0V CR2430 Battery

3.0V CR2430 -- Sony CR2430

The Lithium Manganese Dioxide 3.0V CR2430 coin battery is more difficult to find than other lithium coin cells. The brand name cell that we offer is a high-quality 280 mAh capacity.

3.0V CR2450 Battery

3.0V CR2450 -- Sanyo CR2450

The Lithium Manganese Dioxide 3.0V CR2450 coin battery is generally available. The brand name cell that we offer is a high-quality 560 mAh capacity.

3.0V CR2 Battery

3.0V CR2 -- Sanyo CR2

Lithium Manganese Dioxide 3.0V CR2 cylindrical battery is a generally available photo battery. The cell is used in the transmitter of hoseless dive computers that report the scuba tank contents pressure. The brand name cell that we offer is a high-quality 850 mAh capacity.

3.0V CR123A Battery

3.0V CR123A -- Sanyo CR123A

Lithium Manganese Dioxide 3.0V CR123A cylindrical battery is a widely available photo battery that's popular because of its high energy capacity and suitability for high-drain applications. The brand name cell that we offer is a high-quality 1400 mAh capacity.
The Dive Rite NiTek 3, NiTek He, and NiTek X use the CR123A battery.

3.0V CR 1/2AA Battery

3.0V CR 1/2AA -- Varta 6127

The Lithium Manganese Dioxide 3.0V CR 1/2AA cylindrical battery can be nearly impossible to find. Made in Germany by Varta, it's rated at an excellent 950 mAh capacity. Be careful with polarity because it's reversed from what you would expect. The flat positive end is marked on the side with a "+" and the negative contact has a raised point.

3.6V 1/2AA Battery

3.6V 1/2AA -- Saft LS14250C High-Capacity

The Lithium Thionyl Chloride 3.6V 1/2AA cylindrical battery is difficult to find. Our higher-quality Saft LS14250C is a high-capacity 1200 mAh version that out lasts the 750 mAh ratings of the TekCell SB-AA02 and Tadiran TL-2150 sometimes recommended by dive computer manufacturers.

3.6V AA Battery

3.6V AA -- Saft LST14500

The Lithium Thionyl Chloride 3.6V AA cylindrical battery with a 2450 mAh capacity has the high energy density of lithium battery chemistry and three times the power of alkaline batteries. Most dive computers that accept 1.5V AA alkaline cells, such as the VR3 and the HS Explorer, actually prefer the Saft LST14500 battery as a much longer service life replacement. Compared with alkaline batteries, the Saft LST14500 also works much better in colder environments and has a longer shelf life.
The Delta P Technology VR3 uses the LST14500 battery.
