Technical divers using tables just loved the obsolete Uwatec digital gauge. It was reliable and gave you the basic information of current and max depth, elapsed time, temperature and an ascent rate monitor. It also had a rudimentarily log function, retaining the last nine dives. And... like many things we love, it was far from perfect. The Uwatec was only available calibrated for fresh water, the battery could not be changed (when the battery died you threw whole thing away), it was officially rated only 328 feet (although it could actually go deeper), it was not downloadable, it had no back light and the factory wrist strap would eventually break. Unfortunately, though we loved it, the Uwatec digital gauge is no longer manufactured. Even today, with the popularity of technical dive computers, we still carry backup tables and many divers are seeking a replacement solution for a good digital gauge. We suggest you consider the Dive Rite Nitek Duo, not as a dive computer, but in gauge mode as the Duo Digital Gauge.

The Dive Rite NiTek Duo has a backlit 2.5-inch display with very easy-to-read numbers. In gauge mode, the NiTek Duo displays a variety of gauge data underwater including: current and maximum depths, dive time elapsed, and water temperature. Other features include:

Officially rated maximum depth in gauge mode of 656 feet (200 meters).
Both audible excessive ascent rate alarm and visible indicator for ascent rate speed.
User settable audible alarms for depth, and dive time (i.e. alarm when a specific depth or bottom time is reached).
Configurable for fresh or salt water, imperial or metric operation.
Downloadable 60 dive log with 30 hours of profile logs in 15 second intervals.
Automatically activates upon immersion in water.
Widely available CR2032 user changeable battery lasts approximately 3 years.
Also a full function two gas nitrox Dive Computer. Of course in gauge mode, the Duo will not "lockout" after a missed stop or ascent rate violation.

As an option, Dive Rite Express offers the Nitek Duo with the DSS Elastomeric Bungee Mount and 18 inches of bungee cord. The bungee mount securely retains the Duo, is very low profile, makes it far easier to don than a buckled strap, and is depth compensating. The tough elastomeric material, remains flexible at low temperatures and the download interface cable can be attached without removing the Duo from the mount. The photos show only one bungee lacing method, many more are possible.

These two graphics illustrate what you will see during the dive with the Duo in gauge mode. This example is in metric (Meters and °C), but imperial (Feet and °F) can be configured as well. In "gage" mode the Nitek Duo operates only as a depth gauge / bottom timer. It begins displaying depth and elapsed time once you descend below 5 feet (1.5 meters). While in gauge mode underwater, there are two screens you can toggle between. The primary screen displays current depth and elapsed time. The secondary screen displays maximum depth and lowest temperature reached during the dive. For both screens, the "Speed" bars at the bottom are graphic representation of ascent rate; more bars indicate faster ascent rate. In the upper right hand corner, the two symbols below the "Gage" symbol indicate the maximum depth and time alarms are enabled. In the lower right hand corner, the "Sea" indicates saltwater.
