Dive Rite Modular Valve System

Dive Rite Modular Valve System offers 200-Bar and 300-Bar valve and manifold designs. The advantage of the modular valves are that they may be connected using a manifold to construct a set of doubles, or connected together to form what is known as an H-valve for use on a single cylinder. The manifolded doubles are sometimes disassembled, the manifold removed, and the left-hand and right-hand modular valve manifold ports are plugged to make two single cylinders. Left and right modular valves are also commonly found in the pairs of single cylinders used with fully closed-circuit rebreathers.

All Dive Rite manifolds and valves come standard with burst disks for service pressures up to 3500 psi. All Dive Rite manifolds and valves come with Viton o-rings and oxygen compatible lubricants and are Nitrox Ready. Dive Rite manifolds also come standard with a 180mm isolation crossbar offering 8.5-inch center-to-center spacing that perfectly fits both 7.25-inch and 8-inch diameter cylinders using standard tank bands. Dive Rite also offers a special short 165mm isolation crossbar, this manifold has a 7.75-inch (197 mm) center-to-center spacing. This special shorter manifold will fit the small 5.5-inch cylinders (such as LP45's or AL40's) using special tank bands specifically for these smaller cylinders.

O-Ring Seals

The Dive Rite® modular valve system incorporates double O-ring seals known for their robust reliability. The 200-Bar valves also come with removable inserts for use with both DIN and conventional yoke connectors. All Dive Rite VA3000 series valves come standard with nearly indestructible hard rubber ribbed knobs that feature a molded-in stainless steel insert.

What is the difference between DIN "200 Bar" and DIN "300 Bar" valves?
The Deutsches Institut Für Normung (DIN) is a German standards setting organization similar to our American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Compressed Gas Association (CGA). DIN 477 is a specification that recommends cylinder valve outlet and connector designs for specific types of gases and pressures based upon safety considerations. These various designs have deliberate incompatibilities to preclude the possibility of errors when handling different types of compressed gases at differing working pressures. The two valve outlets and connectors of interest for divers are the DIN 477 No. 13 and the DIN 477 No. 56 (formerly No. 50), both designated for use with compressed air. The DIN 477 valve and regulator fittings are most widely used outside the U.S. The regulator first stage DIN connector is a male screw type, and instead of clamping on to the outside of the valve as does the yoke, it screws directly into the female DIN outlet of the valve. The sealing O-ring is held in the end of the regulator connector rather than in the face of the outlet. The DIN 477 system, with it's captured o-ring design, has proven to be very reliable for use with SCUBA.

Outlet/Connector #13 is from DIN 477 part 1 - for cylinders with test pressure ratings up to 300 bar and is commonly referred to in the SCUBA industry by the slang term "200 bar", probably because most cylinders with 300 bar test pressures have working pressures in the 200 bar range. Outlet/Connector #56 is from DIN 477 part 5 - for cylinders with test pressure ratings up to 450 bar and is commonly referred to in the SCUBA industry by the slang term "300 bar". The two designs are nearly identical, but the #56 valve outlet is deliberately deeper so the shorter #13 connector will not be long enough to seat properly. This is a safety feature to prevent connecting a low pressure device to a high pressure supply. It's important to understand that the "200 bar" or "300 bar" descriptions are just slang terms that have nothing to do with the pressure ratings of the outlets and connectors themselves!

Do You Know Your Right From Your Left?
Modular valves come in right-hand and left-hand designs, referring to the side of the valve handwheel, not to which direction the valve opens. This can be confusing because there is not industry-wide agreement on the perspective from which the valve is viewed.
  • Dive Rite assigns left and right from the perspective with your face toward the valve opening. Thus Dive Rite says that the typical standalone valve is left-handed.

  • Thermo assigns left and right from the perspective with your face away from the valve opening (i.e., the tank is on your back). Thus Thermo says that the typical standalone valve is right-handed.

While both right- and left-hand valves always close and open using the "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey" rule, this can cause problems when modular valves are mounted on single tanks. Well-meaning individuals who fail to notice a valve with the handwheel on the uncommon side and reach to check "air is on" might actually close a valve believing they are doing the diver a favor of opening it. To prevent this from happening, it's a good idea to call modular valve configurations to the attention of divemasters and buddies.

Important Notice:Availability of Dive Rite repair parts and maintenance manuals does not imply qualification to service Dive Rite products. Service by other than an authorized Dive Rite dealer voids the warranty. Improper service of Dive Rite products can lead to serious injury or death.
