Dive Rite 10-Watt HID Light Systems

On This Page: 10-Watt HID Light Systems | Pricing

SALE

Dive Rite 10-Watt Light Systems
High-Intensity Discharge (HID) technology enables you to take along underwater light systems with output the same color temperature as the Sun. Among their key features:

  • HID bulbs have no filament. The HID bulb creates light by creating an arc between poles. The result is an extremely bright and powerful beam. Because of the low wattage required, HID light system burn times are substantially longer than other types. A 10-watt HID bulb is approximately equal in light output to a 50-watt quartz halogen bulb.

  • The HID bulb output has a color temperature of 6,000-6,500 degrees Kelvin, essentially the same color temperature as the Sun. As a result, the HID light is an excellent choice for underwater video and digital still photography -- and nearly any other underwater activity.

  • HID bulbs are generally rated as offering approximately 1,000 hours of bulb life. In reality, bulb life is more directly related to the number of times you turn the bulb on and off. Once activated, you should give the bulb at least one minute to warm up to its proper operating temperature before turning it off. You should also wait at least a minute before restarting a bulb that has just been turned off.

Feature Comparisons

To help you decide which Dive Rite light system is right for you,
we have provided the following feature comparisons.

10-Watt Light Heads

Dive Rite makes 10-watt HID light heads with 500 lumen output in two different reflector styles.

Compact MR11 HID 10-Watt Light Head Compact H10 HID 10-Watt Light Head
MR11 Light Head H10 Light Head
The MR11 is Dive Rite's smallest light head and features a fixed focus best suited to exploration diving. The very tight fixed focus SunSpot reflector delivers a very high intensity 'hot-spot' that offers the most penetration of the 10W lights. The Welch Allyn Solarc™ bulb and SunSpot reflector offers improved shock resistance over the previous integrated-reflector 6-degree HID bulb. The H10 head also features the Welch Allyn Solarc™ bulb, but with a focusable reflector making it Dive Rite's most versatile light head. Its ability to focus from a wide flood to a tight spot makes it good for both exploration and -- with the addition of the Lumedyne reflector -- underwater video and digital still photography.

SunSpot vs. 6-degree

This actual photograph helps to illustrate the difference between beam widths of the MR11 head using the Solarc bulb and SunSpot reflector (left) and the previous bulb with integrated 6-degree reflector (right). The two lights were pointed at a grey semi-gloss painted room wall at a distance of 6 feet, with a hand positioned on the wall between the two beams. The approximate diameter of the SunSpot light circle on the left was 11 inches and the approximate diameter of the 6-Degree light circle on the right was 20 inches. With in-water use, the SunSpot will have more peripheral illumination than seen in this simple wall test. However, because the same amount of light is focused in a tighter beam the SunSpot will be perceived as noticeably brighter.

Elastic Hand Mounts Goodman
elastic hand mount All the 10W lights, MR11 or H10, from Dive Rite Express now include BOTH the Goodman and elastic hand mounts. Your light will have the elastic hand mount installed, or if you wish you may replace it with the Goodman hand mount included in the package. While the Goodman hand mount is the traditional favorite, most divers prefer the form fitting comfort of the Dive Rite exclusive depth compensating elastic hand mount. It may be loosened or tightened using the nylon buckle to ensure the best possible fit. goodman hand mount

Canister Lid

The reliable time-tested design of Dive Rite's light canisters incorporates several important features, including:

  1. Canister -- Both SlimLine and Wreck1 canisters are made from extremely durable high-strength plastics. The SlimLine canister is machined from a solid block of Delrin. The Wreck1 canister is made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

  2. Mounting Hardware -- Canisters come equipped with two stainless-steel hose clamps and a nylon webbing loop. This enables you to attach your canister to weight belts and tank straps, and to BC harnesses whose waist straps are equipped with 2.0-inch webbing.

  3. Canister Latches -- The locking latches are used to help prevent the accidental opening of a latch under water. By opening these latches, you can quickly access the battery and wiring harness.

  4. Wiring Harness & Plug -- The battery attaches to its wiring harness, toggle switch, power cord, and light head through a quick-disconnect plug. You use this same plug to connect the battery and charger. When doing so, the design of the plug helps prevent you from accidentally reversing polarity.

  5. Canister Lid -- The canister lid contains the canister O-ring, toggle switch, boot and switch guard. The O-ring is what keeps the canister watertight. The toggle switch is a special, environmentally sealed unit. If any hydrogen gas escapes from the battery, the toggle switch does not ignite it. The switch guard helps prevent the accidental switch on/off of the light head.

  6. Power Cord -- The canister lid power cord has been selected to stand up to the rigors of underwater use. There are sealing glands that include strain relief at both ends of the power cord. These glands help form a watertight seal where the cord enters the canister and light head.

The actual close up of a canister lid shows many of the features illustrated in the line drawing. In the photo you can see: The belt mount loop, stainless steel locking latch, environmentally sealed toggle switch and boot, switch guard, sealing gland with strain relief and power cord.

Batteries & Chargers

NiMH Batteries and Charger

Dive Rite light systems from Dive Rite Express use Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries. Largely maintenance-free, NiMH batteries are substantially smaller and lighter than gel cell batteries. SlimLine and Wreck1 battery packs are self-contained and utilize a standard, two-pole "trailer plug" connection that is resistant to saltwater corrosion. After light use, you need only recharge the battery. The battery should also be recharged every 30 to 60 days if it has remained unused. A special NiMH charger must be used with the NiMH battery packs. Traveling divers like the NiMH charger because it automatically adjusts to 110/220V current and 50/60Hz frequency. The US power cord is included and power cords are available for most other regions of the globe.

Characteristics of Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries
NiMH batteries do not develop a memory. However, new NiMH batteries need several charge and discharge cycles before they will deliver their full burn time rating. During the first few cycles the burn times may be as short as 30 to 60 minutes. After four to six cycles the batteries will begin to perform normally, and it may take as many as eight to ten cycles before they have been conditioned enough to reach peak performance. The typical battery charging time is about 60 minutes for a conditioned 4500 mA battery that was used to power a 10W light for two hours.

Effective January 1st, 2008 the TSA has placed travel restrictions on batteries containing lithium. The good news is that Dive Rite NiMH batteries contain no lithium and do not have any TSA travel restrictions. Regardless, keep in mind that according to the TSA it's safest to travel with your light battery stored in the canister.
