	Dive Rite Express offers a Regulator Necklace from Manta Industries to help better manage your alternate air source. The necklace concept derives from technical divers that had a need to keep their back-up regulator close to their mouth for instant availability. This is the first product we've seen that improves on the 'homemade' solutions. The Manta Regulator Necklace is one piece molded from smooth, soft, durable, solid core, no-memory silicon rubber. It's negatively buoyant and perfectly designed to fit around a diver's neck, with or without a hood, keeping your auxiliary air source close.
The picture at right demonstrates how to use the necklace. The small opening is simply pushed over the second stage regulator mouthpiece, and even over the cable-tie used to hold the mouthpiece in place. When donning your SCUBA gear, the necklace holding the backup regulator is placed over your head first, allowing the second stage to hang securely under your chin. Then put the primary regulator in your mouth. It may take one or two dives to get comfortable with the new position, then you won't even be aware its there unless you need it.
Manta is now offering the necklace in two sizes, Regular and Fat Head. The Regular size fits almost everyone correctly, because it is elastic. However, on rare occassions a few indivduals with very large necks or heads (Manta uses the term 'Fat Head', not us!) find the Regular size too small. If you are a professional football or hockey player, or just built like one, the Fat Head size is right for you.

A Trend in Regulator Configuration The traditionally configured sport diver uses an 'octopus' regulator setup. Over time, many experienced divers have come to believe this configuration has significant problems. Key issues are that the second stage on a 40 " hose is annoying to reliably stow, causes unnecessary drag, is difficult and time consuming to deploy, and the hose is too short in a genuine emergency. Further, it's not unusual for the octopus to be clogged with silt or sand if not stowed carefully. All technical divers and many experienced sport divers now use a longer hose (60" or 84") for their primary regulator, and put the compact backup regulator on a short 22" hose hung on a necklace directly below their chin. In an emergency the primary regulator is donated in one hand while the backup regulator is instantly available as a replacement using the other hand. With a bit of practice, some divers have even perfected a skill that allows them to retrieve the backup regulator without using their hands at all!

If you wish, you can make your own regulator necklace instead of buying ours. Tie a knot in each end of the desired length of 1/8" diameter bungie cord, then burn the ends of the cord to keep it from unraveling. Cut and remove the cable-tie holding your second stage mouthpiece (take care not to cut your mouthpiece), lay the ends of the bungie cord along both sides of the mouthpiece and then secure with a new cable-tie and trim. Works best with a hood; the bungie is a little abrasive and can rub a raw spot on your neck if you aren't wearing a hood.
